To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation that guarantees gender equity in education and athletics, the Kern Community College District is hosting a conference at Bakersfield College's Renegade Event Center on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, from 8 AM to 3 PM

Keynote speakers for the Women in Athletics in Education Conference include Nikki Blue, a local basketball phenom who graduated from West High and is currently an assistant coach for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA, as well as Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller, a gold medalist for Team USA in the 1984 Summer Olympics and a former NBA sideline reporter on TNT Sports and ESPN. The keynote panel for the conference is a retrospective on the life of Patsy Mink, the author of Title IX and the first woman of color elected to the House of Representatives, featuring authors Judy Wu and Patsy's daughter Gwendolyn Mink, who wrote a 2022 biography on Patsy Mink titled “Fierce and Fearless”. Other panels will cover women athletic directors across the state, women educational leaders, men coaching women athletes and more.

Join us on March 21 to celebrate how Title IX has created unprecedented opportunities for women to excel in athletics and earn college degrees throughout the United States. The Women in Athletics and Education Conference costs $25 to attend, and lunch will be provided. For more information, visit the Title IX Conference website.
