Bakersfield College is excited to announce that it will host a free event for students in Delano at the RFK Auditorium (1401 Hiett Ave, Delano, CA) on March 31, 2023, at 10:00 AM with guest speaker, Katya Echazarreta, the first Mexican-born woman to travel to space. Earlier this month, in honor of International Women's Day, Mattel's Barbie announced the latest launch of role model dolls, one of which is modeled after Katya and features a navy blue flight suit.

Dr. Katya “Kat” Echazarreta, the first Mexican-born woman in space, is an electrical engineer, civilian astronaut, and STEM content creator. Echazarreta first worked at NASA as an intern during her university undergraduate career, and later, with five NASA missions including Perseverance and Europa Clipper Ground Support Equipment group. She is a first-generation student who initially enrolled at San Diego City College before transferring to UCLA where she earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.

At the event, Katya will share her incredible story of overcoming obstacles and achieving her dreams, as well as her insights into the future of space exploration and the role of women and minorities in STEM fields.
