Fifty local high school students enrolled in Industrial Drawing and Architectural Design classes in the Kern High School district came to the Panorama Campus to participate in our annual skills-based Drafting & Computer-Aided Design competition. Many of the students that competed are enrolled in dual-enrollment credit courses. Arvin, Centennial, Foothill, and Valley Oaks High Schools were represented.

After a brief welcome message from competition organizers, students received helpful information about BC Pathways, internship opportunities, and the Automation baccalaureate program from Dylan Jensen (CTE Educational Advisor), Anycia Reyes (ITT Job Development Specialist), and Carlos Medina (Industrial Automation Program Manager.)

Students then spent two hours working at one of the several different competitive events that were scheduled. Some of these events were Mechanical Drawing, Architectural Drafting, 2D AutoCAD Skills, 3D Architectural Design, and 3D Mechanical Design.

While students enjoyed lunch, several local architects and design professionals reviewed and judged the students' work submissions. These judges thoughtfully prepared individual comments to highlight positive aspects of student work, as well as helpful, constructive criticism. After lunch, students went on a campus tour that highlighted the new BC Makerspace, the Science-Engineering Building, the Automation Lab, and many of the Industrial Technology labs.

After campus tours concluded, students met for the Awards ceremony. Our hard-working judges presented students with their awards, and by 2:00 pm the event concluded.

Much appreciation to the teachers from the High School sites who worked alongside Bakersfield College faculty to provide a memorable experience for the participants. It's our hope that these efforts will be fruitful in producing in the students a desire to include Bakersfield College in their post-secondary educational plans.
